What is a container garden? Quite simply it's a garden not planted in the ground, but in a container. This could be anything: a pot, a trough, a bathtub, old fountain, barrels, etc. The possibilities are only bounded by your imagination. Container gardens are extremely versatile and can fit many different styles of landscape. They are not only visually appealing, but are very practical as well. With little space to plant in the ground, a container garden could be just the solution to add the bit of color you've been lacking to your Dallas garden.

Container gardens are a focal point for the eye. They add texture, height, and can instantly elevate a space from "meh" to "wow"! You can place them on the ground, within a plant bed, on a pedestal, or a porch; anywhere that might need a little pizazz. A pair of matching containers on either side of a front walkway is a welcoming addition, especially when planted full of beautiful flowers.

Container gardens are not constrained solely to being flower receptacles or only having a single species of plant within them. You can plant succulents, citrus trees, different types of grasses, or evergreen shrubs - individually, or all mixed together. You might consider arranging a group of pots in some fashion, large and small, to create a visually interesting container space. It is important to keep in mind that it is easier to grow plants in large containers than in small ones. Large containers allow for more soil which can retain moisture longer and better tolerate weather and temperature fluctuations. They also allow for the roots to grow and not be too crowded. Whatever plant you choose, the pot must be the right size for its growth.

No matter what container you choose, it must have drainage holes. This is one of the most common mistakes when planting container gardens. It the pot doesn’t have drainage, the soil will become oversaturated and this is not good for the plants. Also consider the material the container is made of; certain materials are more susceptible to weather fluctuations and may become brittle with frost putting your investment of both container, and plant, at risk.
