Summer has officially begun and that's no joke for north Texas. Here in Dallas, we can top 100 degrees for multiple days in row and not see any precipitation for weeks at a time therefore it’s important to protect and prepare your garden for the heat. Continue reading for four key actions that you can take to help your yard beat the summer heat.

Plant

A good choice for flower beds from Highland Park to Coppell are summer annuals that can handle the Texas heat. Some of our favorites are lantana, pentas, tropical hibiscus, zinnia, and moss rose. Our searing heat is not for every plant. It’s important to pick flowers and plants that work best in the environment given the amount of light, heat, and water. You'll usually be safe with anything labeled "Texas native hearty".

Grass gets more challenging to cultivate and maintain as temperatures rise so if your looking to seed or patch grass, now is the time! Remember new seed or sod needs to be watered twice daily for at least two weeks to establish.

Re-grooming plants after the winter freeze and trimming back erratic growth is very important for a healthy garden, not just an appealing one. By removing dead or dying parts of plants you protect the health of the rest of it and promote healthy expansion. Don't make your plants work harder than they have to by supporting unsightly or unnecessary growth.

We're a big fan of container plantings, they're an easy way to add color and texture throughout your yard but our clients often stop at regular watering. Your potted plants and flowers need to be fed and fertilized just like your law and flower beds. We recommend watering with Miracle-Gro twice a month to encourage healthy growth and robust blooms.
