Is your lawn throwing you shade?

"Throwing shade" is a popular phrase right now that means to publicly criticize or express contempt for someone, so it seemed a fitting subject line for the struggles we face in dealing with a lawn that receives a good amount of shade during the day. The bald spots and dead areas seem to be criticizing us in front of the entire neighborhood.

Signs of Shade Damage

Can you successfully grow grass in the shade?  Yes, but...

Growing grass in deep shade is next to impossible. For starters, you'll need to prune your trees as much as possible without compromising their health or shape to reduce shade as this will let it more light to reach the growing grass. Even shade tolerant grasses need at least at least six hours of sunlight per day. For areas with some light, either naturally or through pruning, growing grass in the shade is possible if you're not looking for perfection. Choosing the right shade tolerant grasses is the first step and here in North Texas, Zoysias seem to perform best.

But there are compromises to made. Ideally, shade tolerant grasses should be kept longer than sun-loving counterparts; a height of approximately three to four inches is recommend. The extra length allows extra surface area for photosynthesis to take place, thus giving a little extra energy to the grass. You should also remove clippings to allow as much light in as possible.

Over-watering is another common mistake made by those learning how to grow grass in the shade. Shade prevents the quick evaporation of dew we typically see here in the Texas heat. Dampness can encourage diseases that can impede growing grass. It is best to water only when absolutely necessary and then water deeply.

Growing grass in the shade is possible, but remember, if you're seeking perfection, you're doomed to be disappointed. So what then? Keep reading!

An Alternative

After years of fighting their heavily shaded front lawn, this family gave up and asked us for ideas. We recommended tastefully converting their lawn to Asian Jasmine, an evergreen ground cover which thrives in the shade and requires a fraction of the maintenance of grass. The ground cover stays green all year long and the homeowners love it; win, win!

If you've been struggling with a shaded lawn, contact us to discuss conversion options. Splendid Gardens provides professional landscape services to Dallas and surrounding cities in North Texas.
