June in Dallas: 3 Must-Dos to Keep Your Garden Thriving

June in Dallas is when the heat turns up - and so do the demands on your yard. The spring blooms may be winding down, but summer growth is just getting started, and your landscape needs a little attention to stay looking its best.

Whether you're a hands-on gardener or more of a garden-appreciator who loves seeing a tidy, thriving yard without breaking a sweat, these are the top three things to keep on your radar this month.

And remember, if you’d rather sip iced tea in the shade than tackle yard work in triple-digit temps, Splendid Gardens can take care of the heavy lifting for you.

1. Feed Your Lawn (It’s Hungry!)

By June, your grass has shifted into high gear, and just like us, it needs fuel to perform its best. If you want that lush, green carpet look, this is the time to fertilize.

Warm-season grasses like Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine love a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer in early June. It helps them grow thick and strong, especially after the spring surge. But the key is to apply it correctly—too much, and you risk burning the lawn; too little, and you won’t see much benefit.

Pro tip: Water your lawn deeply after fertilizing to help the nutrients soak in and reduce the risk of burning.

If the idea of measuring ratios and pushing a spreader in 95° heat isn’t your cup of iced tea, don’t worry - we’re happy to take care of it for you. Our team knows just what your specific lawn needs and when.

2. Tackle Pests Before They Take Over

June is prime time for bugs, and unfortunately, they’re not all the beneficial kind. Insects and fungal diseases can sneak in fast, especially in the warm, humid pockets of your garden.

Here’s what to watch for:

  • Aphids: These tiny green, black, or white insects love the underside of leaves and suck the sap out of your plants. They’re especially fond of tender new growth.

  • Powdery mildew: This white, dusty coating on leaves (especially on crape myrtles) is more than just cosmetic—it weakens plants over time,

  • Scale insects on crape myrtles: If you notice sticky leaves or black sooty mold, you might have scale. It’s a growing issue in North Texas and can really weaken your trees.

Treatment options vary, and timing is everything. Some pests require a horticultural oil, while others respond better to systemic treatments or pruning. If you’re not sure what’s bugging your plants (literally), we can help diagnose the problem and recommend the best course of action.

3. Prune With Purpose

June is the month where a little strategic pruning goes a long way.

  • Spring bloomers like azaleas, spirea, and mock orange should be pruned now—after their flowers fade but before new buds start forming for next year. Prune too late, and you risk cutting off next spring’s blooms.

  • Shrubs tend to go wild in summer, especially fast growers like ligustrum or viburnum. Keeping up with light pruning helps them hold their shape and keeps walkways and sight lines clear.

  • Deadwood removal is important too. Take time to snip out any dead or damaged branches in your trees and shrubs. It not only improves the look but also the health of the plant.

Pruning can be both an art and a science - it takes a trained eye to shape a plant without damaging its future growth. If you’ve ever stared at your overgrown shrubs and thought, “Where do I even start?” you’re not alone.

We offer seasonal pruning services that take the guesswork out of it—so your garden stays neat, healthy, and ready to impress.
