September may signal the beginning of fall, but in Dallas, the thermometer often tells a different story. After a long summer in North Texas, your lawn and landscape need attention, but knowing what to do now and what to wait on is especially important when temperatures are still reaching 100 degrees.
For busy homeowners, September landscape maintenance doesn't need to mean a long list of projects. Focus on these three important areas to help your landscape recover from summer and prepare for fall.
Mid-September is an important time to give your lawn the nutrients it needs before cooler weather arrives.
For all lawns, this application helps support healthy roots and gives the turf nutrients as it heads toward fall dormancy.
Early September is also the window for applying fall pre-emergent to help prevent cool-season weeds before they germinate.
The important word here is prevent. Pre-emergent works by creating a barrier that helps stop weed seeds from becoming established. Once weeds are actively growing, the pre-emergent window has largely passed.
We recommend fall pre-emergent only on established Bermuda and Zoysia lawns that are healthy and have not been significantly stressed by the summer heat.
This is especially important in 2026. North Texas landscapes have experienced an exceptionally difficult summer, and some lawns are already under considerable stress. A lawn that is struggling should be evaluated before automatically following a standard seasonal treatment schedule.
Pre-emergent may also interfere with new grass seed germination, so it should not be applied to areas where seeding is planned.
This may be the most important September advice we can give Dallas homeowners this year:
Don't be too quick to prune away summer heat damage while we are still experiencing 100-degree weather.
After months of extreme North Texas heat, shrubs, perennials and other landscape plants may have scorched leaves, brown tips, thinning foliage or bare branches. It can be tempting to immediately cut everything back to make the landscape look tidy.
Pruning can stimulate tender new growth, and that is not what we want while extreme heat continues. Removing too much foliage can also expose previously shaded portions of the plant to intense sun.
Some plants that look terrible right now may begin to recover once temperatures moderate and we have rainfall. Once Dallas is consistently out of the extreme heat, we can better evaluate what needs selective pruning, what will recover naturally and what truly needs replacement.
Your landscape beds, however, can benefit from appropriate fall fertilization. Fertilizing healthy landscape beds helps provide nutrients to shrubs and other plant material as we transition into fall. As with your lawn, fertilizer should be selected and applied appropriately rather than assuming more fertilizer is better.
Common September Landscape Mistakes to Avoid
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is assuming September means it is automatically time to do everything associated with fall.
In Dallas landscaping, the weather matters as much as the calendar.
Avoid heavy pruning while temperatures remain extreme. Don't apply pre-emergent to every lawn without considering turf health or future seeding plans. And don't assume a heat-damaged shrub needs to be removed simply because it looks unattractive today.
Sometimes the best landscape maintenance decision is knowing when to wait.
Keep it simple:
Early September: Apply pre-emergent to appropriate, established and healthy Bermuda and Zoysia lawns.
Around September 15: Apply fall lawn fertilizer to healthy warm-season turf and fertilize landscape beds as appropriate.
While temperatures remain near 100°F: Hold off on pruning heat-stressed shrubs and plants.
Once temperatures cool: Evaluate summer damage, selectively prune where needed and determine which plants are recovering versus which may need replacement.
September is an important transition month for Dallas landscape maintenance, particularly after an unusually stressful summer. The right care now can help your lawn and landscape recover while preparing your property for a beautiful fall.
