Winter Flowers

Stave off the Winter Blues with Flowers

When the winter months arrive we can loose interest in our home's landscaping; the grass turns yellow and some of our trees lose their leaves. But you don't have to endure a "blah" yard this winter when it's easy to add a pop of color to brighten things up. There are many pretty, colorful flowers you can use in your garden through the winter to bring a smile to your face.

We never really know what north Texas weather will be like during the winter. Some years are mild and it never freezes but every now and then Jack Frost pays a visit and might have a few days below freezing or even snow!  We can even see a drastic difference in temperature and precipitation from Frisco to Highland Park!

Your yard can suffer during the winter months but there are a few easy steps you can take to prevent frost damage to your winter flowers, such as watering your plants early in the morning. If you know severe weather is coming, you can also cover your plants to help them retain some heat but warning; we don't recommend using fabrics as they can become wet with precipitation and crush your flowers by their heavy weight. If you are really concerned about winter weather, you can also put your more delicate flowers in containers so you can bring them inside on those few nights where a freeze is predicted.

Read on to see some great examples of winter flowers that will thrive during the Dallas winter!

Rosemary

There's nothing more festive than a rosemary "Christmas tree" at your doorstep; whether you leave it natural, or adorn them with decorations, you can't go wrong with the hardy winter choice to bring color and holiday cheer to your home's landscaping. Available in both cone shape and spiral.

Colorful Texture

Snapdragons need full sun to partial shade and will your garden some height as they can grow from 12-36” tall and come in a variety of colors.

Cabbages and kales cover a good amount of space, so they give you a lot of bang for your buck. With a pretty purple or pink rose-like center surrounded by pretty green leaves, these ornamental plants need full sun to grow and should also be fertilized.

Pansies in Every Color of the Rainbow

Violas for Shade Gardens

Gardeners often walk right past the violas and head straight for the pansies when choosing bedding plants at the nursery. It's true that pansies are larger than violas, however violas beat pansies when it comes to performance with their blooms often obfuscating the foliage which can produce more color impact and they also show greater stamina to winter weather when compared to pansies.
