The Dallas heat is here to stay for a while, and your yard is feeling it too! July is a critical time to check in with your landscape to keep things healthy, thriving, and beautiful. Here are three essential tasks to tackle this month:
With summer in full swing, your lawn and garden may be showing signs of heat stress. A common misconception is that you should water your grass more frequently when it's hot - but in reality, your turf will be healthier with fewer, deeper waterings. Aim for 1–2 times a week, providing about one inch of water each time. This encourages deep root growth and helps prevent fungal diseases. Early morning watering is best, ideally before sunrise, to reduce evaporation.
Take a walk around your yard and inspect all areas; lawn, landscape beds, and containers. Look for dry spots, wilting plants, or signs of disease or pests. If a section of your irrigation system isn’t working properly, try to get it repaired as soon as possible to avoid damaging your landscape.
Container plants may need daily watering this time of year, along with a weekly dose of high-nitrogen, water-soluble fertilizer to keep them looking their best.
And remember, if something doesn’t look quite right, we’re always here to help. Whether it’s irrigation issues, pest control, or diagnosing a struggling plant, we can help your landscape thrive through the heat of summer.
Even with higher summer temps, July can be a great time to add new trees, shrubs, and groundcovers. New plant installations can thrive on properly adjusted sprinkler system irrigation with a little oversight and possibly a tiny bit of hand watering if necessary.
This is the perfect time to pick out blooming Crape Myrtles since you can see their true flower color in the nursery right now! You can also lay new turf grass and plant summer flowers, just be prepared for regular watering until the weather cools.
While it’s not peak veggie growing season here, it’s actually time to start planning for fall! In early July, plant your fall tomatoes and winter squash (yes, plant pumpkins now if you want them in time for October!). By late July, it’s time to get peppers in the ground. These veggies will need plenty of water, and a bit of shade cloth can help them beat the heat.

Many summer bloomers will give you more color if you keep them trimmed. Deadheading, removing spent flowers—encourages plants to keep blooming instead of focusing energy on seed production.
Some great candidates for regular deadheading include: Zinnias, Gomphrena, Agastache, Echinacea, Rudbeckia, and Butterfly Bush.
July is also prime time for what we call the “Texas Chop.” This means giving many perennials and annuals a more dramatic mid-season pruning, cutting them back by about one-third to one-half. This encourages fresh, compact growth and sets them up for another round of blooms.
Plants that benefit from a Texas Chop: Salvia greggii, Salvia farinacea, Texas Rock Rose, and Catmint.
Not sure what to prune or how much? We offer seasonal pruning services so you can enjoy a tidy, flourishing landscape without the guesswork.
