Drought Tolerant Flowering Plants For Your Dallas Garden
Aug 11, 2020 | By: Splendid Gardens LLC
The dog days of August here in the Dallas area make us think about how we can design gardens that use less water. There are two main components when growing plants—sun and water. For us in Texas water conservation measures while necessary, can be detrimental to plant growth. Keeping your garden beautiful when there is a drought and extreme heat is attainable with some advance planning.
Let’s talk drought tolerant plants. Even though they are labelled drought resistant, this doesn’t mean that they can just be left without water completely. Especially when establishing the plants, you will need to water them deeply and regularly for the first two weeks. After that period this can drop off a bit, but during the first season they will need to be kept well-watered to ensure they are properly established. By cutting down the water incrementally and the roots will begin to deepen and you’ll train the plants to require less and less water.
Some styles of landscaping are structured around the principle of being low maintenance and resistant to heat. One such style is Xeriscape and you can read more about our xeriscape services here. Xeriscape focuses on dry hardscaping and drought resistant plants to create a beautiful space. If you are looking to create a landscape that is both beautiful and low maintenance, maybe Xeriscape is for you.
Here are some beautiful flowering plants that are drought tolerant and thrive in the Texas climate.
