As the weather finally cools down in the DFW area, November is the perfect month to step outside and enjoy your yard. The air is crisp, the light is softer, and it’s an ideal time to give your landscape some love before winter settles in. Here are our top three things to tackle this month:
November is one of the best times of year to plant in North Texas. Add cheerful winter color with pansies, violas, poppies, ornamental cabbage, and kale that will carry you through the colder months. It’s also the perfect time to plant perennials, trees, and shrubs. With milder temperatures, they’ll have a chance to establish strong root systems, making them more resilient when the summer heat returns.
A fresh layer of mulch does more than refresh the look of your beds. It insulates roots, helps soil retain moisture, and offers protection during those occasional freezes. We recommend a hardwood mulch spread two inches thick. While you’re at it, rake up fallen leaves—either compost them or shred them into a nutrient-rich addition to your beds.
Give your turf grass its final mow of the season, but leave it slightly taller to help insulate the roots over winter. This is also the time to clean up your beds: remove weeds, cut back perennials that are done for the year, and give your shrubs a light trim to keep everything neat and healthy.
November is about preparing your landscape for winter while setting the stage for spring growth. A little effort now pays off with strong, healthy plants and cheerful winter color. And if you’d like an expert hand, Splendid Gardens would love to help with all your seasonal landscape needs.
