There’s a house along my dog-walking route that I just love, the front landscape combines traditional elements along with low-maintenance aspects of xeriscape. I’m dying to take a peek behind the fence and see what they have going on in their backyard and I’m sure I'm not the only one that ever thought that when we see a neighbor with a great garden.

A fun thing about my job is that I get to see many different landscapes and spaces in a variety of styles so I am able to give you the inside scoop of what is popular without the awkward snooping. Recently I have noticed an increased interest in vertical container gardens (more on that in a later blog) and trellises in Dallas gardens.

So What is a Trellis?

A trellis is the perfect solution to a fill a vertical space or add some life to a fence view from a window. To be more technical, a trellis is a vertical structure traditionally made out of wood, but can also be made of metal, that supports and displays climbing plants such as flowers, vegetables, fruits, and climbing vines.

Trellises come in many different styles, shapes, and sizes making it an extremely versatile hardscaping element. Because the trellis lives on the vertical plane it is a great way to add visual interest to a yard.

Recommendations for Floral Trellis Plantings

We recommend clematis, evergreen wisteria, cross vine, star jasmine, and trumpet vine. There are other options, of course, but these are our favorites. These plants are strong and bear the Texas heat well. As flowers, these vines will add a pop of color in an unexpected place.
